Isaac and Harriet Copson, great-grandparents of John Copson of Shrewsbury, England. Unfortunately, John knows nothing about the date or the place the photograph was taken. All he can be sure of is that it was not at their home in Atherstone, which he has seen and knows to be very different. Isaac seems to have gotten his start as an shoemaker, and was later in the insurance business as well as a Methodist preacher active in the Atherstone area. John is at john_copson@lineone.net

John Copson's grandfather Harry Beeton Copson. Date unknown, although it does look as though in the older view he may have been dressed for his wedding. Beeton was Harriet's maiden name. Harry was an insurance agent. John believes that he took over the agency from his father Isaac. Harry suffered from poor health during and following his army service in WWl. He died in 1919 and is buried in Atherstone in a grave with a military headstone.

Julia Rollason Copson and in all probability, Thomas H. Copson, great-grandparents of editor Ray Copson. Date of photo not known. Thomas died on November 5, 1923, age 76, at Northampton, Massachusetts. According to his death certificate, he had been born at Exhall, England, was a nurseryman, and the son of Thomas Copson and Ann Webberley. Julia, according to her death certificate, was born on August 13, 1840, died on July 12, 1911, and was the daughter of Nathaniel "Rollaston" and Sarah Jackson of England. Julia, like her husband, was from Foleshill, near Coventry. Both are buried at Brookside Cemetery, Easthampton, Massachusetts, where they had resided.

On the road to Copston Magna, near Coventry, Easter 1989 -- Left to right, Ron Brookes, David Brookes (reading the sign), and editor Ray Copson. When we got there, we found a pleasant crossroads, with a chapel, a green, and a couple of houses. Some old maps call this place Copson and show many houses there and at nearby Copson/Copston Parva, which seems to have disappeared. We need a Copson archaeologist!

Mary Ann Copson Ashley, with her son, Ambrose Ashley, about 1910 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Mary Ann came from Foleshill to Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1892 to join her husband, Albert Ashley, who had emigrated to the U.S. two years earlier. Albert, who had lived in Leicester and Coventry, worked in the elastic webbing industry -- a great sustainer of Copsons. Albert and Mary Ann were the great grandparents of Susan Catalano of Greenwich, Connecticut and Patricia Carroll ( pcarroll@daileycapital.com ), who sent in this photo.
